Description
Reporting to the Team Leader Maintenance Engineering - Bitumen Production, this position has key responsibilities in all phases of development and implementation for the reliability program for the Bitumen Production of the Fort Hills Program. Specifically,
 
1) Responsible for identifying reliability, maintainability and operability threats and opportunities (& making recommendation) in the design of the Bitumen Production facilities (short term)
 
2) Responsible for developing fit-for-purpose reliability strategies, plans & details for Bitumen Production equipment, including development of reliability systems business tools (medium term)
 
3) Responsible for monitoring equipment performance trends, recognizing & acting on deviations from reliability & availability targets of the Bitumen Production facilities, post start-up (long term)
 
This position has no direct reports, but may from time to time lead more junior employees or contractors.
 
Accountabilities
  • Provide Reliability & Uptime leadership for Bitumen Production Operations
  • Provide Maintenance input (RFO and ongoing operations) into all areas of Bitumen Production design (reliability, maintainability, start-up, and shutdown). Provide fit-for-purpose recommendations for design enhancements to meet reliability expectations
  • Develop reliability and maintenance strategy & plans for Bitumen Production equipment
  • Develop equipment maintenance tactics using FMEA and RCMII concepts
  • Recognize required skill sets for trades and technicians. Assist with training and mentoring
  • Identify and introduce approved predictive technologies
  • Monitor performance trends of equipment, highlight & investigate anomalies. Recommend improvements
  • Ensure maintenance business workflow processes are in place and facilitate equipment health management & reliability tracking and assessment
  • Lead the development of preventive and predictive maintenance procedures and spare parts selection
  • Develop equipment repair procedures; review to ensure completeness and critical aspects are addressed
  • Responsible for quality of reliability programs. Audits predictive & preventive practices to identify shortcomings
  • Ensure commissioning and start-up plans include necessary base lining and performance test requirements
  • Participates in the commissioning and start-up of Bitumen Production facilities
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of all reliability and maintenance plans through stewardship to metrics. Reports on same
  • Participate in the planning of maintenance and shutdown activities of the Bitumen Production facilities (following start-up)
  • Available for troubleshooting of complex equipment reliability and availability problems
  • Participate in the development & stewardship of the Maintenance department expense budget (regular maintenance and sustaining capital) approximately $60 M per year
  • Assist with the career development of more junior professionals, technicians and trades
Capability Requirements
  • Senior professional engineer with knowledge of maintenance of Bitumen Production facilities and/or very large heavy industry / processing facilities with 10 years plus experience
  • Extensive experience in developing reliability programs
  • Plant engineering & maintenance experience
  • Experience in start-up of new processing facilities
  • Sound understanding of predictive and condition-based monitoring techniques as well as FMEA and RCMII
  • Knowledge of failures and equipment reliability issues impacting an operation
  • Strong analytical and leadership skills
  • Effective communicator and solid people skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of environment, health and safety and other regulatory compliance requirements
  • Able to participate in and support a team environment
  • Sound experience in facilitating Uptime improvements with operating teams consisting of: other professionals, technicians, supervisors, operators and trades
  • Ability to define the root cause and deliver sound remedies
  • Capacity to handle drivers and complex issues within tight timeframes
Additional Information
  • Initially located in Calgary till Q4 2009
  • Long term the position will move to Fort McMurray with an office located at the Fort Hills site and residing in the operations camp; some travel to Calgary and other centers will be required
  • Travel to visit engineering firms outside of Calgary as well as equipment vendors, courses and conferences will be required.
  • During shutdowns, emergencies, upsets or operating problems, successful candidate will be required to be available and/or at site as necessary
  • Due to the potential for high impact accident/incident (people, business, public), there is a high level of stress; must take rapid and critical decisions in crisis situations
Petro-Canada offers a very attractive total compensation and benefit package. Salary administration will be dependent on the skill level and experience of the successful candidate.
