Senior Geotechnical Developer



The role is to design, develop, support, optimize, and configure internal geological modeling, mine planning and optimization software to achieve high performance, accurate tools that target improved job efficiencies for geological modeling and mine engineering tasks and activities.

  • The ideal candidate will work as a collaborative member of an agile, high-performance technical team
  • The candidate interprets business challenges and translates them into requirements/solutions.
  • Depending on the project will lead and/or contribute to source code development and optimization of software products that serve global geology, mining engineering, and resource development functional areas.
  • Provides conceptual and constructive input for the development of optimal, innovative, and cutting edge solutions which match or outperform the goals and requirements for each project (e.g., fast scheduling algorithms for mine sequencing).
  • Analyzes, architects, and enhances new and existing software tools to develop new software solutions that maximize the value of new projects or existing operations.

Life Cycle Management
  • Establishes and manages development standards; software build process optimization; proposes new software development life cycle concepts.
  • Produces documentation that describes the software application and libraries as part of the development life cycle.
  • Presents solutions to customers and/or internal staff as part of training and initial implementation activities.
  • Participates directly in the implementation of solutions in a technical capacity.
  • Contributes to the development of product manuals, library documentation, and support guides regarding new and innovative mining/geology/resource modeling solutions.
  • Investigates, reviews, recommends, and interfaces with third party products which compliment or improve business objectives and operations.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Documents software defects and enhancement requests, and collaborates with software support personnel to continually improve software solutions.
  • Mentors junior employees in the software development group and throughout the company to provide opportunities for skills development.
  • Delivers high quality products on time and within budget.
  • Participates in internal software development roadmap development including activity analysis, work breakdown structure determination, scheduling and prioritization.
  • Collaborates with commercial vendors as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mining, geology or related Earth sciences field and minimum of 5 years experience in software development related to the mining or mineral sciences field.
  • Experience with C++/CLI development language.
  • Experience with .NET Framework and Windows Forms.
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving and 3D visualization skills.
  • 3 year’s OpenGL (1.4+) or Direct3D experience/knowledge.
  • Experience with Microsoft Visual C++ V6 (or higher) and MFC.
  • Scripting language experience (Perl, Python, VB,…)
  • Varied knowledge in one or more of the following: geologic modeling, techniques, geostatistical theory and practice, operations research, mining methods, mine design, production scheduling, equipment selection, reserve estimation, and mine cost development.
  • Experience with multiple Software Development Life Cycle approaches (including application/program design, requirements gathering, testing processes, and software maintenance).
  • Understanding of core software architecture concepts, including abstraction, patterns, and interface design.
  • Experience with application architecture and design.
  • Ability to manage and lead small teams effectively and manage projects that involve multiple tasks, objectives, and deadlines.
  • Strong technical writing skills and ability to gather and document solution requirements.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to set and meet deadlines.
  • Strong time management and personal organization skills.
  • Aptitude to accept additional responsibility to meet the challenges of a growing technical group.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task.
  • Strong skills with mainstream PC applications (Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, etc.).
