Manager, Maintenance



Relationships:
  • Manager, Mining and Process Manager – provides these individuals with technical advice on matters relating to mechanical and electrical engineering and coordinates and plans with these individuals the work of maintenance personnel within the plant. Advises the Manager, Mining and the Process Manager on the progress of major engineering projects involving the Mining Department.
  • Manager, Human Resources – Provides all information as required for personnel records. Advises on personnel requirements. Receives advice and assistance on industrial relations matters within the department.
  • Manager, Administration – Provides cost information capital and department budgets. Provides clear statements of stores requirements and advises on material requirements for major projects.
  • Safety Coordinator – Advises Safety Coordinator of Maintenance Department training requirements, cooperates in safety and training programs and reviews with the Safety Coordinator any problems relating to safety and the safety record in the department.

Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates the work of the Maintenance Department with the Production Department to ensure the efficient performance of all company activities.
  • Develops detailed plans, schedules and procedures for the systematic maintenance of all equipment.
  • Provides operational and technical guidance to subordinates and guides them in the formulation of their plans, schedules and budgets.
  • Programs the work of the Maintenance Department to obtain the most efficient utilization of plant and equipment.
  • Prepares operating budgets, recommends capital budgets and submits them to the GM, Operations, for approval.
  • Reviews progress of work and compares the actual results with the planned results; initiates corrective action as required.
  • Establishes shop layout to ensure that the most effective arrangement of maintenance facilities and equipment is obtained.
  • Sets up control procedures for all machine shops to ensure a smooth and efficient flow of work.
  • Installs and operates a work order system. Obtains satisfactory explanations for the costs in excess of standards or estimates.
  • Trains employees and installs work procedures to improve the efficiency of maintenance operations.
  • Establishes performance standards for his immediate subordinates, compares actual performances against the standard and effects correction and training as required.
  • Ensures that variances from budgeted expenses are investigated and initiates corrective action when required.
  • Studies and develops improved methods of maintenance and revises periodically the program for systematic maintenance to improve the quality of the maintenance and reduce the cost.
  • Remain up-to-date and abreast on industry activities and recommends the use of new techniques, methods and equipment to improve performance and reduce costs.
  • Advises the GM, Operations and Departmental Managers of the economical benefits to be achieved by new techniques, machinery and equipment as these become available.
  • Submit proposals for the purchase of new machinery and equipment in accordance with the capital and operating budgets.
  • Coordinates the materials requirements with the Materials Manager and his staff to ensure an adequate supply of maintenance materials.
  • Advises departments concerned of progress on major projects and overhauls as compared to approved plans.
  • Ensures that safety and fire procedures are strictly observed in his department and assists in the development of new procedures as required.
  • Maintains an up-to-date organizational structure of the Maintenance Department and ensures that a continual training program is in effect.
  • According to the established policy and procedure, develops and maintains up-to-date position guides for his immediate subordinates.
  • In conjunction with the GM and corporate HR department, authorizes the promotion, demotion, dismissal and increases in salary of any employee in the Maintenance Department, other than immediate subordinates.
  • Recommends to the GM, Operations the promotion, demotion, dismissal or increase in salary of immediate subordinates.
  • Implements Corporation policy relating to management – employee relations.
  • Keeps abreast of and passes on to his subordinates the objectives, policies and procedures of the Corporation.
  • Ensures that all operating staff are familiar with their terms and conditions of employment.
  • Represents the Corporation in disputes and grievances within the Maintenance Department that cannot be handled by a subordinate.

Basis for Performance Review:
  • The extent to which the objectives which he sets for his subordinates relate to the Corporation objectives, and their ability to achieve them.
  • His ability to maintain effective relationships between the Production Departments and Maintenance Department.
  • The extent to which maintenance work is planned and scheduled to minimize loss of production.
  • The extent to which the overall cost of maintenance is reduced and the quality of service is improved.
  • The extent to which he is able to improve his department’s activities through innovative and creative design and implementation.
  • His ability to maintain good safety and employee relations record.
