Metallurgical Lab Manager



ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:
  • Under minimal supervision from the Quality & Metallurgy Manager, this position is responsible for managing the laboratory, which is responsible for both Production and R&D statements of work.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • This position reports directly to the Quality & Metallurgy Manager with a functional relationship to R&D Manager
  • Reporting to this position will be the Lab Production Supervisor and R&D Supervisor along with associated technicians
  • This position will work in a support role to other QA and Metallurgy staff and other departments on an as needed basis.

EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • This position may have numerous contacts with customers and suppliers on a variety of technical tasks.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manages the test lab, which includes sample machining using CNC mills and lathes and sample testing using servo-hydraulic and static test frames performing a multitude of tests specific to the aerospace industry.
  • Manages the Production lab testing requirements through the Production Lab Supervisor.
  • Administers the upkeep of all the testing equipments, furnaces, and test sample preparation machines and equipments.
  • Troubleshoots any equipment failures with minimal downtime.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all the testing equipments hardware and software systems including the necessary preventive maintenance programs.
  • Manages the portfolio of R&D projects through the Research Supervisor.
  • Improves the laboratory processes and systems via a cross-functional leadership role.
  • Have the skills and knowledge to interpret customer specifications and other contractual documents and implement the applicable requirements.
  • Performs training for UAC employees.
  • Supports other QA & Metallurgy staff functions as appropriate.
  • Complies with all safety, health and environmental policies, rules and regulations. Including familiarity and understanding of JSA’s & BSA’s for related work areas.
  • Personal protection equipment is to be worn and/or used at all times as directed for the position.
  • Performs other required duties as needed in addition to the essential responsibilities described above.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education:  B.S./M.S. in Material Science and Engineering or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Experience:  3 or more years experience preferred, recent graduates are acceptable with demonstrated abilities in leadership and project management. Strong candidates will have hard alloy and/or extrusion experience.
  • Communication skills:  Excellent verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.  Must be able to resolve conflict with internal or external sources always in the utmost professional manner.
  • Equipment knowledge: Knowledgeable of servo-hydraulic and static test frames. Knowledge of machining and sample preparation is a plus.
  • Computer skills: Advanced MS Office skills at minimum. Advanced database and programming skills is a plus.
  • Reasoning skills:  Must possess excellent reasoning skills to solve technical and personnel problems.
  • Certifications and Licenses:  None required.
  • Physical demands:  Ability to stand and walk for a minimum of 50% of the time, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach with hand and arms, feel with hand and fingers 30% of the time, talk and hear in person and on the phone 80% of the time. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
