Project Engineer

The Project:
- Long Lake is a joint venture between two industry leading partners Nexen Inc. and
OPTI Canada Inc., to combine Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) with
proprietary OrCrudeT technology, Hydro-cracking and Gasification to produce a
premium synthetic crude oil;
- With more than two billion barrels of
recoverable reserves and resources, Long Lake has an estimated reserve life of
approximately 40 years, with no exploration risks or declines;
- Utilizing Shell Gasification technology
and the largest "Liquids Gasifiers" in the world, it will produce an
initial planned production of 60,000 b/d of premium synthetic crude oil; with
regulatory approval in place for an additional 70,000 b/d of upgrading
capacity;
- Utilizing this unique configuration of
conventional and proprietary technologies, Long Lake will reliably produce a superior crude
oil at the Oil Sands industry's lowest cost.

The
Role:
- Employed by Nexen and seconded/reporting
to the OPTI Upgrader Technical Services Manager, the Project Engineer will
function as an "internal staff specialist" focused on the proactive
provision of timely advice, counsel, guidance and project(s) development and
delivery services to all concerned parties involved in the Commissioning,
Start-up and Safe ongoing Operations and Maintenance of the Upgrader and
related systems;
- The selected individual takes a "lead
role" in establishing appropriate
project delivery parameters/protocols and practices, ensuring their
integrity and utility in support of the ongoing operation and optimization of
the Upgrader and related processes, currently under commissioning and start up
operations;
- Additionally, the identification and
implementation of those initiatives/projects which will tangibly contribute to
Safe, Regulatorily compliant and cost effective sustainable operations of the
Upgrader is critical and an ongoing core responsibility;
- Will directly contribute to the migration
of project(s) technical knowledge and expertise throughout the organization
both formally and informally;
- Assists in the identification and
development of qualified individuals to meet ongoing organizational and
succession planning requirements;
- Directly contributes to the reliability,
planning, preparations and all planned Shut Downs and to the execution of
Phases II and III Pre-Commissioning, Commissioning and Start-up activities.
The
Candidate:
- A
relevant degree in engineering; APPEGA registration or eligibility for registration
is highly desired
- A Certified
Engineering Technologist with education, equivalent experience and supplemental
training will be considered;
- A minimum of ten(10) years of verifiably successful
relevant experience with a minimum of seven (7) years of "hands on"
Project(s) development and delivery experience;
- Solid working familiarity with advanced project(s)
development and execution technologies and practices, as well as Productivity Improvement tools such as Six
Sigma, CIP etc., are desired;
- Superior analytical, planning and
competent project(s) execution capabilities and the ability to develop
timely/effective solutions are critical, as is a practical ability at a field
construction level;
- Solid technical/trouble shooting skills,
along with the ability to effectively communicate with all concerned
Operations, Maintenance and Engineering personnel;
- Computer literate, including
Excel/Word, is a must, SAP familiarity is preferred;
- Experience with Upgrader
operations/projects is a definite asset and is preferred;
- "Hands on" experience with
Pre-Commissioning, Commissioning and Start-up a definite advantage.
