Job Overview

This position is responsible for managing process and product metallurgy with an emphasis on Heat Treat and Material Specifications. This will include working with Engineering to select the material and processing and then writing the procedures to meet the required properties. This position will manage the Heat Treat and Physical Lab Departments.Subject Matter Expert for product metallurgy, heat treat, and material specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Work safe and be an advocate for safety.
  • Work with all other managers to support the production schedule.
  • Works injury free, strives for an injury-free work environment, and maintains the highest Health, Safety and Environmental standards in our industry.
  • Work with the safety teams and employees to attain a safe work place and have a goal of zero injuries.
  • Meets the requirements of the internal and external customers as required to support the production schedule and plan.
  • Manages all resources in the responsible departments. This includes equipment, tooling and employee resources. Provide leadership and direction to performance leaders and subordinates and instill a High Performance Organization culture and effective accountability.
  • Ensure adequate and engaged workforce through the implementation of sound human resources practices.
  • Maintain effective communication, prioritization, problem solving and delegation of tasks to ensure attainment of the production schedule and requirements.
  • Work closely with Design and Manufacturing Engineering on introducing new products and engineering changes to the market place.
  • Develop and monitor metrics that measure performance objectives and initiate corrective and preventive actions. Examples are production, quality, training, 6S, Operational Excellence, and cost reductions.
  • Prepare and support the annual budget and capital plan for assigned departments.
  • Write heat treat instructions for new parts and disposition failures for Heat Treating Department.
  • Coordinate Engineering groups on material selection and processing
  • Track nonconformances and evaluate for trends
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis on failures
  • Carry out manager responsibilities in accordance with organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.


Education / Qualification

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering or Material Science degree plus five years related experience.

Language Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and work instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or LTI employees. Excellent communication with outside vendors and people at all levels within the organization.

Mathematical Ability
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

Other Skills and Abilities
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Must be able to learn new technologies.
  • Must have good analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Must be willing to work extensive hours as needed.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, etc.

Typical Work Enviornment
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently in an office/ lab environment and occasionally exposed to outside conditions. Outside activities require proper P.P.E. and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, airborne particles, extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the plant work environment is usually loud to very loud.
