Job Description

This position primary focus is on the "operational geology" support of the clay mining operations; which includes geological sampling, interpretation and other associated tasks to support delivery of appropriate quality plant feed. This role will also support the execution of the mining plan, which includes the development of short term mine plan (as part of the mining team), tracking of mining activities, contractor and crew management, and providing survey control in the field. This position is expected to demonstrate Safety leadership and an environmental stewardship in all aspects of this role.
Responsibilities, Skills & Experience RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:

Ability to develop, model, and communicate accurate geological interpretation of the assigned deposits.
  • Conduct sampling, collect field data (exploration, sampling, and similar) and develop a geological understanding of the deposit
  • Be able to translate this into a presentable model using LNA supplied software in a geological model that is able to be visualized by non-technically trained team members.

Support the Quality Control program
  • Manage the accurate collection of field samples and maintain the sampling database(s)
  • Review and interpretation of the results, with recommendations for resolving plant feed quality issues

As part of the Mining Team, provide support in executing the mining plan successfully. This includes:
  • Working closely with the team and leading, as needed, the development of the various mine plans
  • Accurate measurement and documentation of mining activities and performance
  • Clear reporting of conditions, issues, and trends.

Managing assigned projects from start to completion, utilizing Lhoist project management methodology
  • Responsible to ensure development of appropriate scoping, schedules, designs, cost estimates, and related
  • Provide supervision of project teams, contractors, and consultants.

Conduct routine terrestrial surveys of the mines, facilities, stockpiles, and other locations utilizing a variety of surveying techniques including GPS, Optical (Total Station), and Aerial Photogrammetry (Drone).
  • Conduct routine measurement of pit progress, stockpiles, sample sites, and similar locations
  • Provide services in locating and marking of mining limit boundaries, road locations, and similar tasks
  • Manage the collection, reduction, and archiving of the raw survey data in accordance with Lhoist survey guidelines.

Provide Operational and Technical support to the Site team
  • Collection and entry of key production and maintenance data into the associated database and tracking of identified Key Performance Indicator(s)
  • Provide inventory support by tracking and procuring critical consumable items
  • Lead in the identification and correction of safety and production issues; identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Prepare to be the step-up supervisor/manager when needed (back shifts, vacations, etc.).

  • Experience with or high aptitude for learning the various general and specialized technical software packages; must have strong computer skills including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Familiarity with or high aptitude for learning multiple survey skill sets and equipment, has a willingness to obtain UAV Pilot license (drone surveying).
  • Must have the ability to work with minimal direct supervision and is capable of independent action within the range of the general instructions, policies, and standards;

Physical Demands include, but are not limited to:
  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned and capable of accessing all plant locations, which could include heights, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
  • Will be working in both an office environment and in a mining environment, which may include exposure to: temperature extremes, noise, uneven surfaces, vibration, oils, and atmospheric conditions such as dust, fumes, and metallic particles.
  • May be required to periodically perform the following actions: Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing, and sitting.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Required Experience: Must have at least 3-5 years of progressive technical responsibility in surface mining environment.
Required Education: Bachelor of Science degree in geology, mining, or related engineering / technical degree and/or equivalent proven work experience in the field
