  • Performs the assembling, fitting, and adjusting or dismantling required in the construction or disassembly of experimental engines, machines, or components preparatory to or after tests made to prove engineering theory and design. Performs all functions necessary on a machine or component to configure or dismantle the test/evaluation being performed. These functions include assembly, adjusting, fitting, fabrication, disassembly of components and other modifications. Install necessary test transducers and other devices as required to perform the test.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The experimental mechanic role at the Peoria Proving Ground is widely diversified without detailed procedures.  The work may involve assembly of an entire prototype machine, the buildup of sub-assemblies that include modifications to current production models, or minor changes to a configuration in preparation for machine test activity.  The mechanic works from blueprints, sketches, computer generated models, and written instructions from the supervisor or engineer.  He/she will often plan the method and sequence of the assembly.  The work involves all common mechanic hand tools, portable power tools, power presses, simple machine tools, and occasionally powered crane to assemble parts into a complete unit, making alterations and hand fitting parts when necessary.  The mechanic will use various precision gaging tools to check accuracy of assembly and fitting operations.  He/she may operate machine/device to check assembly and performance.  They will make suggestions concerning methods of overcoming difficulties encountered in assembly / disassembly, reasons for parts failure, possible changes in design to correct failure, and any other pertinent criticisms or ideas gained while performing assembly / disassembly or dismantling of the test.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience & demonstrated skill in heavy equipment repair, assembly, and disassembly

Top Candidates will also have:

  • [Company] Think Big Program graduate (proven hands on mechanical aptitude)
  • Two-year technical degree within the disciplines of automotive technology, agricultural technology, heavy equipment technology, or diesel mechanic technology.
