The Role

Reporting to the Mining Manager, you will be responsible for providing sound Geotechnical advice and planning input to the Mt Carlton Mining Operation.

What will you be doing?

  • Manage risks associated with Geotechnical hazards within the bounds of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Regulation 2001 in order to maintain and improve mine safety.
  • Ensure that the site complies with the relevant mining act and regulations with respect to managing geotechnical risk.
  • Develop geotechnical standards applicable to open pit mining.
  • Facilitate all internal and external geotechnical audits and inspections & develop internal auditing tools as required.
  • Work with Mine Planners to optimise slope design for good mining practice and predictable results
  • Lead the annual review and update of the Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP) for Mt Carlton (Open Cut)
  • Develop and review Slope Stability TARP’s that covers the authorities and responsibilities of operators and staff at MCO
  • Back analyse all failures to assess the mode of failure and assess the rock mass properties (rock mass and structure cohesion and friction values). Use the data as a predictor of future failure mechanisms. 
  • Undertake a rock testing program to ascertain the inputs for future design work.
  • Work with the respective site team to ensure that the management plans ae understood and implemented accordingly.
  • Improve selective mining processes via reduction ore blast movement analysis and dilution of Open Pit.
  • Undertake analysis on D&B results to determine powder factors and blast initiation sequence that is appropriate for varying rock mass conditions.
  • Work with the technical teams and site mining personnel to facilitate safe and practical mining plans and practices in the field.
  • Produce timely reports to site Management about any current or foreseen geotechnical issues.
  • Be “solutions driven” to remedy any current or foreseen geotechnical risks
  • Deliver regular ground awareness presentations to technical and operational employees, and provide basic geotechnical awareness training when required.
  • Facilitate all geotechnical data acquisition and analysis conducted by third party consultants as required.
  • Commit to maintaining health, safety and security standards and principles, both within own workplace and through the identification of potential risks throughout Evolution
  • Act as a mentor for all junior or less experienced technical team members.

Are you the one?

  • Sound experience in a Senior Geotechnical capacity in open pit mining
  • Experience with geotechnical investigations, interpretation and reporting as well as the development of models (both underground and open pit)
  • Understanding of relevant staututory requirements
  • Risk management experience
  • Technical skills in specialised Geotechnical, Mining Software and Mine Planning systems - such as Surpac, Vulcan and Sirovision
