The 6th edition of the Zambia International Mining and Energy Conference (ZIMEC 2016) took place from 23rd-24th of June 2016 at the New Government Complex Conference Centre in Lusaka, Zambia. Building on the successes of ZIMEC 2015, this year’s edition was running under the theme: “Mining & Energy on the growth path to support and grow the Zambian economy”.

The conference came against the backdrop of challenges in both the mining and energy sectors over the last year – low commodity prices and a crunching energy deficit. Around 70% of Zambia’s earnings depend on copper mining while over 90% of electricity is generated via hydro. Zambia has long had calls for diversification of the economy away from dependence on copper but ZIMEC 2016 amplified these calls, further giving a strong call for diversification away from hydro power generation.

The conference was officially opened by Hon Christopher Yaluma, the Minister of Mines & Mineral Development, who read the speech on behalf of His Excellence President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. In his speech, President Lungu stated that the challenges in both the mining and energy sectors presented an opportunity to both the government and the private sector to think outside the box in trying to find lasting solutions.
