The federal government is in the process of completing the most extensive revisions to the federal environmental regulatory regime in decades. The new Canadian Environmental Assessment Act has shifted significant responsibility for environmental approvals to the provinces and there has been a corresponding increase in the government’s focus on enforcement and penalties. It is essential for anyone working in, or advising, companies that are subject to British Columbia’s environmental laws and regulations to understand how the federal changes fit in with B.C’s regulatory regime, and the steps B.C. is taking to streamline its own processes and procedures.
