Caledonian Pacific Minerals has made an application for an Exploration Licence covering 300 sq km in the Bingara Diamond Field located in northern New South Wales. Exploration for the primary source of diamonds in the area is reportedly supported by recent research by the Geological Survey of New South Wales which has developed a new model for diamond formation that is directly applicable to the Bingara Diamond Field. This model is conceptually focussed on active subduction in which diamondiferous material is captured by rapidly rising alkalic magmas that cut through the subducted slab to form diatremes at surface.
