WME reports that Cubex and Maclean Engineering have developed a machine specifically to solve a rock support problem for Inco's Birchtree mine in Canada. The Birchtree mine has a weak rockmass and because of this, it requires extensive support using grouted and pre-tensioned rockbolts, so Inco approached Cubex and Maclean for a bolting solution. The firms worked together to build the new Gemini cable bolter, which is mounted on a proven Maclean articulated carrier. Interestingly, the machine is also able to carry out production drilling not unlike a recently introduced Atlas Copco rig (WME Jul/Aug 2004). The Gemini rig is designed for both versatility and safe operation and is equipped with an elevating platform, powerful drilling equipment and rugged operator protection.
The Gemini is already in use and has received favourable reports from Inco as the machine has shown itself able to install up to 183 m/shift of cable bolts. It is designed to drill hole diameters of 41-76 mm to lengths of 31 m.
