Latest Information February 28, 2002 Microdiamond analysis recovered the best results to date at Ellendale: for the first 4 of 29 samples from fissure lamproites discovered at Ellendale during 2001, the results prove that the fissure-lamproites are diamondiferous and have the potential to be the source of the Terrace 5 alluvial diamonds. For example, the best result was a total of 21 microdiamonds from 28.8 kg of sandy tuff from Kimberly 21 Lamproite for a grade of 73 microdiamonds per 100kg. As of 2001, recovery of large (+0.8mm) chromite grains from two upstream tributaries of Blina’s main ancient paleao-gravel system known as the Terrace 5 gravels, indicating the likelihood of a proximal primary source for the Terrace 5 diamonds. In 2000, a total of 195 diamonds weighing 83.94 carats were recovered for the period. The indicator minerals were recovered from samples taken from two buried tributaries of the Terrace 5 gravels, identified to the north and east of Pit 61. The results included the recovery of 10 diamonds weighing 3.96 carats from Pit 75, which is located 1.5 kilometres downstream of the richly diamondiferous Pit 61, within the main Terrace 5 system. April 9, 2001 While recent attention has focussed on Canada, South Africa and Namibia as sources for new diamond production, Australia, home to Rio Tinto's famous Argyle diamond mine, may represent another hot prospect for aspiring diamond miners. Like its South African counterpart, the city of Kimberly, Perth-based Kimberley Diamond Co Ltd may soon become synonymous with gem quality diamonds. Kimberley Diamond has plans to make additional Australian production a reality, this time with gem quality diamonds in mind. |
