A peak body representing the mining sector has rejected unionist claims that safety is being compromised for profits after a teenage miner died in central Queensland. Daniel Hensler, 19, was undertaking electrical work underground at BHP Billiton's Cannington mine, east of Mount Isa, when the cage he was in fell to the ground from a forklift last Friday, reports Australian Associated Press.

Safety concerns had been raised in the past over the use of mining equipment that apparently cost a man his life in north-west Queensland today, a union says. Daniel Hensler, 19, had been undertaking electrical work underground at the BHP Billiton's Cannington mine, east of Mt Isa, when the cage he was in fell to the ground from a forklift at about 2.15am (AEST), reports Australian Associated Press.

The company will accelerate a programme of decline and stope access rehabilitation at the mine following and assessment of ground conditions. This will impact production in the southern zone of the mine. The northern zone mining activities will remain unaffected.
