CARLIN / GOLD QUARRY

Newmont reported on it's Gold Quarry operations for the quarter ended Mar31/09. Surface ore mined in the first quarter of 2009 for all Newmont's Nevada operations decreased to 6.3 million tons, down from 8.4 million tons in the previous year quarter primarily due to mine sequencing at Gold Quarry. Ore placed on leach pads in the first quarter of 2009 decreased 45%, for all Newmont's Nevada operations from the first quarter of 2008 to 2.6 million tons due mainly to mine sequencing at Gold Quarry.

There were higher tons mined at Gold Quarry relative to the same period in 2007.

A panel of the Nevada Supreme Court affirmed the original decision of Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s (NDEP) renewal of the Clean Water Act discharge permit for Newmont’s Gold Quarry Mine. The NDEP granted the discharge permit. Newmont will now continue to operate under the new permit.
