As of Aug/08, the company started the execution of the Radomiro Tomic Sulfides Exploitation project under emergency mode. It consists of a crushing system and the transfer of material for shipping sulfided minerals from Radomiro Tomic deposit to the Chuquicamata concentrators, located 8.2 km length. It will require an investment of US$382 million and will be operative in 2010. It will produce 160,000 tonnes of fine copper annually.
As of Dec08, the company comes to an end the pre-feasibility study of the Chuquicamanta Underground Mine project, which will aim to extract mining resources beneath the current pit, which will be unprofitable through the end of the next ten years. The enterprise has an investment estimated in US$2,000 million and involves the transformation of the world biggest open pit in an underground operation. The production capacity will be 340,00 tonnes of fine copper annually during at least 50 years. The Chuquicamata Underground mine will commence its feasibility study during 2009.
During 2007, Codelco Norte renewed a significant part of the Chuquicamata mine’s fleet of mining trucks. 13
trucks were bought, each with a 360 ton capacity.
