The Cuiabá Mine Expansion Project was approved by the AngloGold Ashanti Board of
Directors in January 2005. This project, which will deepen the mine from level 11 to 21, will
increase yearly production from 830,000 to 1.3 million tonnes. It will improve the quality of
our operations as it is planned to achieve state-of-the-art mining. The preliminary licence
has been granted by the Brazilian environmental authorities and the main challenge we
now face is to integrate the implementation of the project with routine mining operations.
