Baja Mining announced that a key milestone has been achieved towards manganese metal production at its Boleo project in Baja, Mexico. Staff at the University of British Columbia’s Hydrometallurgy Research Laboratory have successfully demonstrated that manganese metal can be manufactured from Boleo manganese carbonate using conventional hydrometallurgical processing steps.
Baja Mining Corp. signed a letter of intent with ICA Fluor to perform the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) for Baja Mining’s Boleo copper-cobalt-zinc-manganese mining project located near Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The project will be performed in two phases. MMB has released ICA Fluor to work on Phase I, which consists of the development of an open book capital cost estimate and project construction schedule. The cost estimate will reflect current market conditions and be supported by the work performed to date (about 30% of engineering has been completed). The Phase I capital cost estimate will be subject to independent third party review, and is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2009.
Baja Mining updated engineering and construction work at the El Boleo Project copper-cobalt-zinc-manganese project at Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Following the previously announced slowdown in project construction the Baja has been devoting significant time to progressing detailed engineering. Work also continues at Boleo to complete certain infrastructure on site, such as the phase 1 construction camp and desalination plant. The Baja has also commenced a capital and operating cost review, as it believes that one positive outcome of the global financial crisis and the related easing of the construction market, is the potential for a reduction in capital and operating costs in the near term. The slowing of the original construction schedule now enables Baja to take advantage of the reduced cost environment. The re-costing estimate is being undertaken in Vancouver together with the assistance of Baja’s Korean partners.
