Xstrata and Queensland Government approvals have now been received for a A$274 M expansion of Xstrata Zinc's George Fisher Mine in Queensland, Australia.
During the 12 months the mine increased production in 2008 by 10% to 3.1 million tonnes. The
completion of the KG53 decline/incline project in September allowed for production from George Fisher North Upper Level to be trucked to the surface in the fourth quarter of 2008

Reported that the KG53 decline was approved in the last quarter of 2007 and is two-thirds complete. The project is expected to commence production in the final quarter of 2008, producing 500,000 tonnes per annum and supplementing production at George Fisher North underground mine. Following improvements to hoisting capacity made in the second half of 2007, production increased by 17% to 1.46 million tonnes of ore in the first half.
