A 60-day review was conducted in the first quarter of the financial year in order to address losses incurred since the December 2002 quarter, mostly due to the mining of low and medium grade areas in the No 6 shaft at Harties. This resulted in the cessation of all surface recovery operations, the closure of several business units, the retrenchment of approximately 3,000 employees and a 5% reduction in gold produced by the end of the first quarter.Working costs were reduced by 26% in the same period.
