The Cliff project is a new development of an underground, narrow-vein nickel mine located in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia. The project will supplement ore supply to the existing concentrator at Leinster Nickel Operations. It is expected to generate an estimated 8,500 tonnes per annum of nickel in ore over 10 years, commencing in October 2008.

A remote West Australian nickel mine will remain closed pending an investigation into the cause of an underground explosion that killed a 32-year-old miner. The Australian Associated Press reports that Mark Quinn, 32, an employee of mining contractor MacMahon's, was working about 900 metres underground when the explosion happened late Friday. Operations at the mine, which is part of BHP Billiton's Leinster Nickel Operation, 950km north east of Perth, were halted after the tragedy. No-one else was hurt in the explosion and its cause of which is not yet known.

Production was higher with mill throughput and metallurgical recovery at record levels. This performance was underpinned by record productivity from the Perseverance mine and mining of remnant ore from the Harmony open pit. Processing of Harmony ore is expected to continue through to year end. The Perseverance 6-11 Level development project is continuing to plan with the new ventilation system commissioned during the quarter. Overburden removal continued at the new 11 Mile Well open pit near Leinster, to provide ore to replace Harmony in 2005.
