Operations were suspended. A concern arose that the base metal content in the tailings dam at Gympie plant (used to process the ore) could potentially exceed Gympie’s licence conditions and so it was considered prudent to suspend processing of Norton ore while technical solutions were investigated. Options for resuming processing ore from the Norton Gold Mine are being sought.

Norton Gold Fields entered into an agreement to acquire the Mount Morgan gold mine tailings project tenements located in central Queensland, Australia, near the company's Norton Gold Fields gold mine project.
Following contamination at tailings dam, Norton Gold Fields (NGF) Ltd has temporarily ceased production at its Norton gold mine in central Queensland, Australia. Buka Gold Ltd, in which NGF has an existing toll treatment deal, has proposed to stop the processing of ore from the Norton mine until the environmental issue is addressed. Mining at Norton has been difficult as the mine required to deliver a high grade ore (>8 g/t) to cover the cost of mining, transport and toll processing. The mine has now completed the excavation of its first open cut and further development work would be required to expand the second pit.
