It was announced that the mine, with annual nickel output of 2,700 tonnes, will cease operation by the end of January 2009. In July 2007, Xstrata Nickel announced investment of $8.7 million in the Thayer-Lindsley mine to access additional ore, enhance productivity and extend the mine life by over one year. As a result of the investment, the mine life has been extended to the end of 2012. During 1998, the mine infrastructure program was completed, facilitating an increase in mine output from 250,000 tonnes to 400,000 tonnes of ore per year.
