UNDERGROUND MINING

ABB has delivered more than 600 new mine hoists and modernized hundreds of older hoists from nearly every manufacturer and vintage. As the only supplier of complete mine hoists, both mechanical and electrical, we are uniquely able to optimize total solutions for our customers. ABB has introduced a number of technological breakthroughs for mine hoists including hydraulic disc brakes, analog and digital thyristor converters, digital control and monitoring systems, controlled braking, and rope-oscillation control.

ABB Mining and ABB Automation can provide central control rooms for underground automated mining systems. Central control rooms can be located either underground or on the surface and allow mine operators to monitor and control many mine processes and infrastructure systems including: mine hoists, material handling conveyors, crushers, electrical systems and ventilation systems. A complete mine and mill data and information management system can be provided by linking the ABB Knowledge Manager to the mine central control room.

ABB continues to develop and apply modern control and drive systems to all kinds of mining equipment. We can give existing equipment new life through complete or partial refurbishment. In both cases the objectives are high availability and convenient control. Foremost in our designs are the specific customer requirements and the operating conditions. Five decades serving the mining industry has taught us a lot - our equipment defies extreme heat or biting cold, heavy shocks and vibrations as well as notorious dust.

For example, the electrical revamp of a BE 295BII Shovel Excavator in cooperation with an iron-ore mine in Mexico. All main drives have been equipped with frequency converters of modular construction. ABB's solution has improved availability and reduced the cost of operation.
