Aventurine Engineering, Inc., designs and produces software used by cost estimators in the minerals industry. These are designed to estimate the costs associated with underground, surface, and placer mines and has recently released a program specifically for estimating the costs of reclaiming mine sites. Cost Estimating Software

Aventurine Engineering, Inc. produces the Sherpa line of software for cost estimators and economic evaluators in the minerals industry. We have developed a series of computer programs that you can use to estimate the capital and operating costs associated with underground, surface, and placer mines, and have recently released a program designed specifically to estimate the costs of reclaiming mine sites.

Engineering - Based Cost Estimation
Program algorithms are engineering-based (as opposed to statistically-based). The software calculates costs in the same way that you would yourself, if you had the time. Sherpa calculatesand suggests specifications for the production and ancillary equipment fleets. It also determines workforce requirements, staff needs, and supply consumption rates, and (using standard engineering calculations and relationships) provides specifications for buildings and ancillary facilities.

Input/Output Flexibility
The programs handle up to six separate production segments, or phases, which may be spread over a mine life of up to 25 years. Almost all input variables can be altered from one production segment to the next. Items such as daily production rates, stoping or excavation methods, development requirements, wages, salaries, supply prices, equipment types and sizes, and a host of other project parameters can be changed as necessary to meet your needs. Itemized cost results are reported in a cash-flow format.

Global Applicability
Evaluations can be made in either English or Metric units. While all necessary salaries, hourly wages, and equipment and supply prices are drawn directly from a cost database included with the program, an intuitive method of overwriting most of the supplied information is an integral part of program operations. For instance, local wages and salaries are easily substituted for those supplied in the database.

Quick Estimates
You can make quick estimates based solely upon minimal project information (e.g., reserves, production rates, and haul profiles). Sherpa suggests values for all necessary engineering parameters, including items such as hole loading factors, material densities, explosive types, bench heights, stope dimensions, and development requirements. If you instruct it to do so, the program will then proceed to estimate all pertinent costs with no further input.

Detailed Estimates
For more detailed estimates, experienced estimators can overwrite any or all of Sherpa's suggested engineering parameters by simply typing in new values. Equipment, supply, and manpower requirement values suggested by the program may also be overwritten. This feature allows you to incorporate your experience directly into the software algorithms.

Easy to Use
The programs are fully menu-driven, Windows-based applications in which all screens are carefully designed for clarity and ease of use. Every screen is accessible from a main menu. Help screens are also provided for each entry. These screens explain the type of information requested and the way in which Sherpa determines its suggested values. Help screens also provide alternate data that can be used to modify Sherpa's suggested values.

Easy to Learn
User's manuals are also included with each license. These fully explain software operations, utility functions, and program algorithms. Included in the manuals are detailed tutorial examples designed to enable you to quickly learn the primary features of the program.

Net present values, payback periods, rates of return, breakeven values, and risk and sensitivity analyses are the results.

Both Simple and Complex Models Handled with Ease
Enter simple models into the program in minutes, with the results available in seconds. Complicated models (multiple ore types, commodities, and smelter or refinery schedules; production costs that vary over time; multiple royalty terms; multiple ore bodies mined simultaneously by differing methods; equity, loan or joint venture financing) require little added effort.

Apex is completely menu-driven, with easy to understand data entry screens.

The Results You Expect
Apex produces a complete cash flow schedule for your project and then computes the projected net present value, pay-back period, and internal rate of return on either a before- or after-tax basis. With the initial results computed, it is a simple matter to change any of the data items and determine the impact that change would have on project economics, or you can proceed to determine breakeven values for any of the items and go on to conduct sensitivity and risk analyses in a variety of ways.

Breakeven Analysis
You can easily compute the breakeven value for any of the data items you entered, such as ore grade, production rate, stripping ratio, smelting charges, or mining costs.

Risk and Sensitivity Analysis
Powerful risk and sensitivity modules allow you to examine the economic effects of variations in the data elements. By testing ranges of values, Apex allows you to work with data that might not be as accurate as you would like it to be. If you can tell Apex how accurate you think your data is, it will tell you how certain you can be of the results.

Report Output
Your report print-out contains a complete summary of data and results in a professional looking format suitable for independent presentation or inclusion in your project report. Apex also allows you the option of exporting your results to popular spreadsheet or word processing programs.
