Rio Tinto's Iron Ore Operations Provided the Only Significant Increase,First Quarter 2003on Fourth Quarter 2002, From22 .7Million Tonnes to23 .2Million Tonnes,at2% Increase,as DID Mined Zinc,an8% Increase Over the Last Quarter's Production. for the Quarter Compared With Fourth Quarter 2002, Significant Reductions,Include Diamonds ,28 % Down at7.1Million Carats; US Coal ,9% Down at28 Million Tonnes; Refined Copper ,9% Down at 96.000Tonnes; Refined Gold ,9% Down at 96,000Ounces; and Titanium Dioxide Feedstock ,9% Down at290,000Tonnes. Australian and Indonesian Coal and Mined Copper and Gold Also Contributed Significantly to a Weaker Quarter,When Compared With Fourth Quarter 2002Production Levels. Weaker Production From Rio Tinto's Wholly Owned Australian Argyle Mine Contributed to the Fall OFF in Diamond Production as DID Lower Production of Refined Copper at Kennecott Utah Copper and Palabora for Refined Copper Production. Diamond Output,Meantime,Gained16 % From a Year Earlier,Boosted by Production From the Canadian Diavik Mine,Which Provided247,000Carats. Also,Compared With Fourth Quarter 2002, Reduced Quarterly Production of Gold Mined From the Grasberg-Joint Venture Block and Bingham Canyon Contributed to Lower Mined Copper and Gold Totals,as DID Gold Production From the Alumbrera Mine in Argentina.     Anglo-Australian Mining Giant Rio Tinto Posted Across the Board Production Figures for the Three Months,Ending 30June. the Production of Principal Commodities Diamonds and Copper Increased From6.18 Million Carats and 200,600 Tonnes to8. 43Million Carats and228, 500 Tonnes,From First Quarter Levels Respectively. Diamond Production Increased DUE to Higher Grades at the Canadian Diavik Diamond Mine. Lower Grade Ore was Processed in the First Half of 2001to Facilitate PIT Development. Copper Production was4% Below the Same Period of Last Year,as a Result of the Closure of the North Concentrator at Kennecott Coupled With the Mining of Hard Ore Reduced Kennecott Mine Production by 30%. Refined Copper Production From Kennecott for the Quarter of 108,700 Tonnes was35 % Above the Second Quarter of Last Year as a Result of Higher Smelter Availability. Mined Gold Production for the Quarter of 745 ,000Ounces was 21% Lower Than in the Second Quarter of Last Year DUE to Lower Grades at Kennecott and Grasberg. Alumina Production Increased18 % to489,000Tonnes From 413 ,000Tonnes for the Corresponding Quarter Last Year. Total Coal Production Remained Relatively Unchanged Quarter on Quarter at36 . 87Million Tonnes,and Iron Ore Production Decreased Marginally to 21.6Million Tonnes. Aluminum Production Increased Marginally to193, 900 Tonnes From the Corresponding Quarter Last Year as a Result of the Acquisition of Additional Equity in Queensland Alumina in September Last Year.
