With softening iron ore and coal prices in Australia, miners are focussing more on making existing mines more productive rather than breaking ground on greenfield operations, says Geoff Knox who is Chief Executive Officer for GE Mining and GE Transportation in Australia. "All those customers are saying the same: they've got a good solid cost base and they would certainly prefer higher prices but they are not worried about the current price cycle," says Knox who spoke to MINING.com at MINExpo in Las Vegas last month. "They are all talking about focused capital spend and focussed operating spend to get more efficiency about what they got on the ground." Mine operators main motivation for going with autonomous trucks is to make their mines safer, says Ed McCord, general manager of the truck division, during an interview at MINExpo 2012. The customer says the mine has to be safer with autonomous trucks rather than using drivers. After safety the second motivation is cost. Hiring drivers to work in remote locations can be expensive. McCord says in the end the real savings is productivity rather than containing costs. Autonomous trucks can just be driven longer and more efficiently. (MINING.com)

The Mecheshoo Agreement is an Impacts and Benefits Agreement for the Renard Diamond Project between the Cree Nation of Mistissini ("CNM"), the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) / Cree Regional Authority ("GCC(EI)/CRA") and Stornoway Diamond Corporation. The agreement was signed by representatives of Stornoway and the Cree parties at a ceremony held in Mistissini, Quebec on March 27 in the presence of community members, members of the local "Tallymen" family, regional dignitaries and media. It is a binding agreement that will govern the long-term working relationship between Stornoway and the Cree parties during all phases of the Renard Diamond Project. It provides for training, employment, business opportunities and financial benefits during project construction, operation and closure, and sets out the principles of social, cultural and environmental respect under which the project will be managed.
