Overview

The Buzwagi mine is located in north west Tanzania in the Kahama district of the Shinyanga region, approximately 97 km from Bulyanhulu and 6 km south east from the town of Kahama.

The Buzwagi mine comprises an open pit mine, ore-processing facilities, a waste-rock storage facility, a tailings storage facility, water management and other ancillary facilities.

Buzwagi began production in May 2009. The mine is Tanzania's second largest mining operation and the largest single open pit mine in the country.

The mine would produce 200 koz gold per year over an estimated 12 years mine life.

Location

The Buzwagi mine is located in north west Tanzania in the Kahama district of the Shinyanga region, approximately 97 km from Bulyanhulu and 6 km south east from the town of Kahama.

Buzwagi is well connected. The site lies immediately beside a paved highway and a 1,580-metre airstrip. It is also only 40 km from Isaka, a railway hub with links to the port of Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean.

The site's annual average temperature ranges from 16 deg C to 29 deg C. The average annual rainfall is 953 mm.

Geology and Mineralization

The Buzwagi project is located within the highly prospective Lake Victoria Greenstone Belt in Tanzania on excellent terrain, which is relatively flat, open land..

It is a shear-hosted quartz-veined gold deposit hosted by prophyritic granites.

As of December 31, 2011 reserves at the mine were estimated at 45 million tonnes grading 1.46 g/t gold for 2.154 million ounces of gold.

Mining & Operation

The Buzwagi mine comprises an open pit mine, ore-processing facilities, a waste-rock storage facility, a tailings storage facility, water management and other ancillary facilities.

Mining operations include drilling, blasting, loading and hauling of the ore to the crushers.

Mining equipment include three blast hole drill rigs, Komatsu shovels, three excavators, 15 150t haul trucks, front end loaders and dozers.

In 2012, production is expected to be lower due to a shift to mining lower grades areas.

Processing

Processing at Buzwagi consists of crushing, grinding, gravity concentrating, cyanide leaching. The mill is designed with a name-plate capacity of 12,000 tonnes per day.

Promcess equipment include: Jaw crusher, SAG mill, Knelson KC-XD-48 concentrator, CS2000 ACACIA reactors, CIL circuit.

In 2011, the mine produced 196,541 ounces gold at US$691/oz. Copper production for the period amounted to 7,201 Klbs.

As of 2012, the company's immediate priorities were related to completing the detoxification plant and initial certification process under the International Cyanide Code and improving the mill and plant's performance.

Environment & Community

Some 220 households were relocated and another 320 landholders have been compensated for resettlement.

To date the company excavated 67 water wells that serve the needs of local communities.

To reduce the dependence on aquifers for getting process water Buzwagi constructed the country's first industrial rainwater harvester, a 75-ha lined bowl that captures rainfall and channels it into a 1.5 million cubic metres reservoir.

The company also works with Tanzania's national power utility to bring adequate and reliable power to the mine and region.
