The El Hatillo coal mine in Colombia is located in the central portion of the Cesar Department, 210 km southeast of Santa Marta. The concession area is adjacent to the town of La Loma and encompasses an area of 9693ha.
Vale S.A. acquired El Hatillo in the first quarter of 2009. At the end of 2011 it was announced that it was looking for a buyer.
El Hatillo is mined with truck and shovel methodology and uses crushing and screening, to produce a thermal coal product that is loaded onto trains at a dedicated rail loading facility for transport to the port of Sociedad Portuaria Rio Cordoba (SPRC). Most of the thermal coal product is exported to Europe and the US.

The economy of the César Department is sustained by the agricultural sector, secondly by a services industry followed by commercial industry and mining.
Coal formations of the Cesar department belong to the Lower Eocene Los Cuervos formation with a total coal thickness of up to 35 m. It contains multiple coal seams each individually seam being 2 m to 6 m thick.
As of December 2011, El Hatillo's proven reserves were estimated at 32.7 million tonnes of thermal coal having a calorific value of 25.2 KJ/kg.
El Hatillo is a conventional open pit mining operation that employs a truck and shovel methodology.
In 2011, the mine produced 3,565,000 tonnes of thermal coal.
El Hatillo mine uses crushing and screening, to produce a thermal coal product that is loaded onto trains at a dedicated rail loading facility for transport to the port of Sociedad Portuaria Rio Cordoba (SPRC).
The SPRC port is located in Cienaga, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, in the Magdalena Department, about 67 kilometers from Barranquilla and 31 kilometers from Santa Marta.
Most of the thermal coal product is exported to Europe and United States.
In February 2012, violent protests were staged by inhabitants of the village of La Loma which accused the El Hatillo mining operation of pollution.
