Sadly, it has taken the deaths of 14 coal miners in West Virginia in two incidences in a single month to convince the news media, politicians, and the general public to again rank mine safety as a high priority, writes Mineweb. Admittedly, some of the foot-dragging may be attributed to complacency as a record low of 22 coal mining deaths and 35 hardrock mining fatalities were reported last year, according to Mining, Health and Safety Administration (MSHA) figures. Only one death has been reported so far this year in hardrock mining.
