Recent announcements by Argentina's environment minister, Romina Picolotti, concerning damage generated by cyanide use in mining sparked a reaction from sector players. Picolotti told local press earlier this month that the use of cyanide in gold extraction is causing economic, environmental, and social damage. "It is not in our best interests. We are not fighting poverty with this type of mining," said the official. In response, Salta province mining minister Ricardo Alonso told BNamericas.com,"this is very grave because it fosters huge legal insecurities around [mining] activity. Those statements are worrisome."
