LocationThe Snettisham Peninsula is located on the south side of Port Snettisham and west of Gilbert Bay, about 40 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska. Port Snettisham Iron Ore property is located on a deep sea port in THE GULF OF ALASKA (in immediate vicinity to Asia) that is suitable for year round shipping.
GeologyThe magnetite body in Port Snettisham is an elliptical intrusion about 2 miles in outcrop along shore that is mainly composed of hornblende-magnetite clinopyroxenite, biotitemagnetite pyroxenite, and hornblende-biotite-magnetite clinopyroxenite.
ExplorationThe first major effort to explore the iron potential of the deposit was in the 1950's by the U.S. Bureau of Mines who drilled at least 9 holes totaling 6,543 feet, did a geophysical survey over the body, and had beneficiation tests done on the ore. Drill core from this drill program is available thru the Alaska Geologic Material Center. The work outlined a magnetite-rich area of the pyroxenite about 2,400 feet by 9,600 feet in area with a vertical extent of 1,000 feet. . A ore reserve is figured at 100,000,000,000 ton.
Concentration studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines included staged wet magnetic separation treatment which produced a product that assayed 64.5 percent Fe,.
In 1969, the Marcona Corporation optioned the Snettisham iron deposit and carried out extensive exploration, including diamond drilling and metallurgical tests. In 1970 Marcona Corporation completed a feasibility study on the Snettisham Iron Deposit and announced plans to put the deposit into production at a rate of 5 million tones of concentrate per year over a 50 year mine life.
