InfoMine's Monthly News Roundup

Canadian mining industry is reshaped

You would hardly believe it was summer, a time for rest and relaxation. Some of the biggest mining stories of the year played out.Last month, Inco and Falconbridge were trying to get together with a little help from Phelps Dodge. But the deal was scuppered by Xstrata, the Swiss-based miner, who was able to come up with a sweeter offer. The latest news from the Canadian Press is that all but one of the Falconbridge executives and board members have been replaced, and the company was being absorbed by its new owner.

After the Falconbridge deal went away, Inco tried to get together with Phelps Dodge. Teck Cominco circled on the outside, trying to put together a better deal for shareholders. But the large Brazilian miner, CVRD, offered the most compelling bid. Nothing is completed yet, but the Canadian Press is reporting that the deal with CVRD and Inco is essentially done. In a little month, some of the largest and well-known Canadian mining companies are no more.

InfoMine's Buyers Guide

Making the Buyer's Guide Catalog Search work for you

The Buyer's Guide catalog search was launched on January 20, 2005, and has significantly added to the ease with which buyers find global mining suppliers. In the last three months alone, over 30,000 catalog searches have been conducted. Below is a simple example of how the catalog search can effectively narrow the list of suppliers with catalogs for the products or services you require.

For example, how would you use the catalog search to find underground loader suppliers in the United States? The primary options for searching are by "all words" and "exact phrase", with the search fields "at least one" and "without words" used to narrow the criteria. A search can be narrowed further by Region or Country. So, to find underground loader suppliers in the United States, "loaders" would be added to the "exact phrase" field, "underground" to the "at least one" field, and lastly, the country "United States" would be selected from the drop down menu. In this example, your catalog search fields should look like the following:

Please click try this search to see a live version of this search. To learn more about using the catalog search, please visit our catalog tour. Don't hesitate to contact Greg Fenrick, Lori Levesque or Carlos Obregon for a live demo.

Mine Rhymes

A Question Of Dimension
- By Ashurst Whiteside

The Judge was at home, he, too had a mine:
The showings were good and the prospects were fine.
It was a hundred feet wide and the ore it would run,
One hundred dollars, in gold to the ton.

The judge slung at Jim a whole book of Geology,
But he tempered the same with efficient psychology,
For he filled the dutch oven with venison stew,
And he cooked up the beans, as only he could do.

There were faults and intrusions where the porphyry came through,
And flows and fragmentals, and "papylite" too.
When forth to the slaughter,he, the old master led,
After looking it over old Jim shook his head.

"Your stringer," say's he, "I've no doubt will run
But how much does this "papylite" go to the ton?
Your ore is alright if your assays aren't wrong,
While a hundred feet wide, it's but half an inch long.
