Hansel and Gretel Become Geologists!
(And get great jobs!)

Hansel & Gretel

There was once a very poor couple in the forestry industry, who could not afford to feed the whole family. They decided, quite horribly, to solve their hunger troubles by losing their children when they were out harvesting wood, so the wild animals would get them. Little did they know that Hansel’s little budding interest in rocks, and Gretel’s fascination with crystals, would foil their plans, as they would both leave a trail of ores and deposits to find their way back home each day.

One day, while out chopping wood with their parents, there was some seismic activity, and the trail of pebbles and geodes they had left suddenly rolled into a new path leading them to the local quarry. There they found employment in the field of their dreams and would live happily without hunger for the rest of their days.

Like most stories, this one is a metaphor for our own lives. While Hansel and Gretel found their calling’s fruition by luck, InfoMine’s new Browse Jobs Pad is the "Bread Crumb Trail" to the sweetest dough in the industry. Drill down easily to find the jobs you’re looking for. You can even bookmark the page so you can come back quickly and easily so you’ll never miss a golden mining employment opportunity.

While we might not feel poor like Hansel and Gretel, employers are paying more and more to meet their staffing demands in this hot, and still warming industry. When you consider the wages being negotiated right now, it makes you feel just a little more hungry.

Mine Site of the Month

Tulawka
tulawaka.infomine.com

The Tulawaka mine is an open pit mine located in western Tanzania. The property consists of seven prospecting licenses covering 317 km2. The main Tulawaka gold deposit is called the East Zone, which is currently being mined mined at a rate of 7 to 9 million tonnes per year. The open pit will cover a total area of approximately 50 hectares and will reach a final depth of 135 m. Gold was discovered at Tulawaka in 1998 and the mine began commercial production in 2005. There has been no history of mining in this area. The mine life is currently expected to be four years.

The gold-bearing quartz vein in the East Zone ranges in thickness from 60 centimeters to 4 meters. Half the gold is processed by gravity separation and the balance using conventional carbon-in-leach technology. The feasibility of an underground mine in the East Zone is being studied. The potential of mining the West Zone pit orebody, located five kilometres west of the current East zone pit, is being evaluated.

Barrick is the mine operator. As of 2005 245 people are employed directly by the mine and another 300 by the contractor. Mining is continuous, with two 12-hour shifts per day, seven days a week. Extraction of ore and waste material from the pit is being done by Caspian Mining, a Tanzanian contractor. more »
