InfoMine Joins in Sponsoring SME/NSSG Student Design Competition

Meeting Picture

What better way to introduce young students to life in our industry than to present them with a tough mining problem, put them in a room to work out a solution in less time than they think they need, require them to present their solution orally before a panel of judges, and then challenge them with difficult questions to see how well they can defend their solution? This is pretty much what will take place for three days before the start of the SME annual meeting in Denver, February 26-March 1,2007, at the SME/NSSGA Student Design Competition, and InfoMine will be there with reference material for the students to use during the contest and for the winning team to take back to its school. A subscription to InfoMine, as well as prize money from other sponsors also awaits the winning team.

Six 6-person teams will compete in this year's contest, two from Virginia Tech and one team each from the University of Missouri - Rolla (winner for the last two years), Colorado School of Mines, University of Kentucky, and University of Nevada - Reno. The teams, which have already competed in an on-campus phase of the competition, will be assigned to develop a technical design for an underground limestone quarry. In the on-campus phase of the competition, the teams were presented with drill data, geotechnical data, and other information required for them to complete an estimation of reserves; develop a mine plan, including a ventilation plan, roof control plan, and blasting schedule; determine equipment specs and personnel requirements; and specify environmental impact mitigation measures. In Denver, the teams will be asked to complete additional anaylsis on their design in order to help a "Board of Directors" decide the best path of completion for the project they began during the on-campus portion. On the third day of the competition, the teams will present their plans to the judges, and a winning team will be chosen.

Funding for the competition is supported by corporate sponsorship. Last year's sponsors included Granite Construction, Inc.; Lafarge North America; APAC, Inc.; Franklin Industrial Minerals; Oldcastle Materials, Inc; Telsmith, Inc.; Aggregate Industries; Casper Stolle Quarry and Contracting Co.; Conco Quarries, Inc.; Fred Weber, Inc.; Leo Journagan Construction Co.; Material Service Corp.; Vulcan Materials Company; Western Mine Engineering, Inc. (now InfoMine USA Inc.); Valley Rubber & Gasket Co. and the AIME Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. Sponsors are welcomed for this year's competition. Anyone interested should contact. Open Season

Binoculars

We have officially entered Job Hunting season.  While it might not be readily apparent in the newspapers and other traditional employment media, it is inherently apparent in the online employment marketplace.

The statistics prove it – and it makes sense! We can track users online, and every year, the statistics tell us that people go job hunting in the new year. Industry wide, this year has been an unprecedented increase in viewership for InfoMine Careers, as we have seen an increase of roughly 30% jump in viewership over last September’s figures.

So the stats prove it - the holiday season is over, and we’ve all had plenty of time to re-evaluate out current lot in life.  Are we happy with our earnings? Does our current employment meet our expectations? Have we made any resolutions to change our current situation?

If you’re hunting for employment at the moment, you’re in good stead; demand from the employers is high, and the supply from the workforce is the lowest we have seen in years.

Mining employers worldwide have recently completed their hiring strategies for the year, and they are now posting their vacancies in order to fulfill them. Get your resumes up, and strike now.

If you’re in Human Resources, and you need to fill roles for your company or are supporting a corporate hiring strategy, this is the busiest time of the year for you, and there has never been the success in online recruitment as we are experiencing right now. We have more than an 8% increase in viewership from this time last year. Something akin to spawning season for salmon – it happens only once a year, and this is the biggest year in history. Get your rods and nets out there, and tap into this river overflowing with candidates. It’s open season!

Happy Hunting,

Johann Robertson

EduMine introduces new cyanide management for gold and silver miners

EduMine

A cyanide management plan is of critical importance to many gold and silver mining operations because of the environmental risks. In some cases, lack of such a plan has contributed to adverse environmental incidents involving cyanide. Cyanide Management in Mining is a set of online courses that provides the background for development of a cyanide management plan that meets the unique requirements of each operating mine more »

Risk based decision making in mining

Risk Based Decision Making in Mining

This two-day live course by Dr. Franco Oboni, Vancouver, January 26 and 27, will show how risk assessments add value to mining projects (as they do for any project or human undertaking), and in particular how a proactive use of risk assessments contributes to responsible practice and environmental integrity yielding optimized positive results on the industry and society at large.

Recently, new parameters have been defined allowing a positive, proactive use of the notion of risk. This course will focus on the so called Economic Safety Margin (ESM), a parameter which encompasses the expected return of a project as well as its costs and the life cycle risks associated with it more »

Malmberget

Malmberget (which means "ore mountain") is wholly owned by LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag). LKAB is a Swedish high-tech mineral products company owned by the Swedish Government. Its primary business is the mining of iron ore and its primary mines are in Malmberget and nearby Kiruna. LKAB supplies highly upgraded iron ore products to the steel industry, custom-adapted mineral products for other industrial sectors and products and technologies for mining.

LKAB presently employs approximately 1,000 people at Malmberget, 900 of whom are employed in mining, processing and administration. LKAB has also established a mining museum in the town which hosts a reconstruction of the mining shanty town from which the village of Malmberget has grown.

Malmberget has been a producing mine since 1888, and has in that time removed over 350 million tonnes of ore. During 2005, 12 million tonnes of crude ore was processed at Malmberget and, together with Kiruna, 23.3 million tonnes of pellets and fines were produced. Once the new pelletizing plant at Kiruna is complete in 2008, Malmberget will begin producing all of LKAB's fines more »
