Expert in cyanide and mining launches blog

Terry I Mudder, an environmental engineer and scientist, launched a new blog, Mind Workings. Read about NGOs, the consultant’s role and the measurement of low levels of cyanide. Dr Mudder has been instrumental in the development and application of many chemical, physical, and biological treatment processes for cyanide and metals, for which he has received both national and international awards. He currently runs a consulting firm located in Sheridan, Wyoming.

I Think Mining
The Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation met in Vancouver for three days this July. Jack Caldwell attended and posted a series of news reports on the proceedings on his blog.

He writes about the laws by which mining companies have gained and lost mines; found and developed mines; and have been precluded from developing mines. The saddest / happiest story he tells is the court case of Aquiline v. IMA. Because the parties signed a badly drafted Confidentiality Agreement, IMA was ordered by the court to give up title to the silver mine they had opened and developed. It does not get much worse than that.

Debora Wotherspoon teaches Vancouver children math, science, and business. She writes her blog, Making Sense of my World, on InfoMine to force herself to articulate the factors that guide her own investing. You too can benefit from her thinking and advice by reading her blog. Here is an abstract from her most recent writing: The rules I currently use to screen stocks are:

  • Rule 1 - Ore grade should be $60/ton or more at today’s strong metal prices for a successful open pit mining;
  • Rule 2 - Basic information such as share structure, reserves/resources, feasibility plan, and the mine’s goals should be apparent within 10-15 minutes of reading their publications;
  • Rule 3 - Development properties are a low priority if there is no cash flow and no development on them.

Gap between Canadian and U.S. Mine Salaries Continues to Grow

Gap between Canadian and U.S. Mine Salaries Continues to Grow
Canadian mine salaries continue to outpace U.S. mine salaries in most job categories when compared in common currency units, according to recent surveys by the CostMine division of InfoMine (formerly Western Mine Engineering).   For the first time this year, even professionals at U.S. coal mine salaries were paid less than their Canadian counterparts for most titles.

This conclusion is drawn from the results of surveys of 250 Canadian and U.S. mines conducted in 2006 and 2007.  Average benchmark salaries derived from the surveys are listed in the table below.  The Canadian wages are listed both in Canadian dollars and in comparable U.S. dollars at the June 1, 2007 exchange rate of 1 U.S. dollar equals 1.0682 Canadian dollars.  Canadian coal mines are grouped with other Canadian mines because of the small size of the Canadian coal industry.  No adjustments were made for the timing of data collection which extended over a period of 18 months.

Not only do the Canadian personnel take home higher salaries, but they are more likely than their U.S. counterparts to receive bonus checks, and those checks tend to be larger as well.  Nearly 75% of the Canadian mines reported paying bonuses to their salaried personnel, in amounts typically ranging from 5% to 25% of base salaries, with some as high as 50%.  The U.S. metal and industrial mineral compensation survey reported 67% of mines paying bonuses, with amounts typically ranging from 5% to 25%.  Considerably fewer U.S. coal mines, only 57%, reported the use of bonus plans, and the amounts tended to be less, typically 2 to 20% of base salary.

Details about the mine compensation surveys upon which this data is based are available at costmine.com.
