Ahafo Mine Campus on EduMine Newmont Mining Corporation came into Ghana through the acquisition of Normandy Mining Company in June 2000. The acquisition brought two greenfield projects located in Ghana into the company’s portfolio. The two projects which had no previous mining history are situated in the Brong Ahafo Region and the Eastern Region. They are respectively referred to as the Ahafo and Akyem Projects. The Ahafo Mine, which is operated 100 percent by Newmont, is located 186 miles (300 kilometer) northwest of Accra, Ghana. Our Ahafo operation started in 2006, and is currently mining from three open pits, with reserves contained in 17 pits with an underground potential and include a process plant containing a conventional mill and carbon-in-leach circuit. The operation produced its first one million ounces in September 2008.
